Moremi in August
August keeps the flood at full stretch and takes the sting out of the mornings. It is the second half of Moremi's mid-winter crest, played a few degrees warmer and, at the margins, a fraction less fought-over than July.
If you only want the answer
August matches July for water and game, with days back up to 28.7°C and nights at 12.4°C instead of single digits. Booking lead times remain brutal at nine to twelve months. Late in the month, the first hints of the receding season appear at the floodplain edges.
The crest, warming
Still 0 mm of rain in the thirty-year averages, but the temperature curve has turned: 28.7°C days and 12.4°C nights against July's harsher numbers. The flood remains effectively at peak for most of the month, so the compression of game onto the dry margins continues uninterrupted, and the wild dog denning window is in its final, most active weeks as pups begin moving.
By the last days of August, sharp eyes notice the outermost floodplains starting to give back a little ground. That retreat becomes September's whole story.
July's sibling, and the one difference
Choosing between July and August on wildlife grounds is a coin flip, and our July page says so from the other side. The single genuine difference is comfort: August returns the mid-winter dawn to merely cold rather than bitter, which matters more than it sounds across a week of 06:00 starts in an open vehicle.
Photographers should know the regional caveat: winter burning across southern Africa puts haze into August skies, softening distances and reddening the low sun. Treat it as an aesthetic, because you cannot treat it as anything else.
Costs, boats and the sharing trick
The booking mathematics are unchanged from July, with the public campsites claimed the better part of a year ahead and peak rates across the lodges. Water activities stay at full capability throughout: long motorboat routes, reliable mokoro at Mboma, the heronry still busy.
The August tip is financial: boat hire prices at the stations are per boat, not per person, so walk the campsite in the afternoon and assemble a shared charter. Half the cost buys the same lagoon.
