September pulls the plug, slowly. The flood begins its retreat across the reserve, and as each floodplain drains, the animals it watered fall back with it, stacking the Khwai corridor and the lagoons with the densest herds of the year.

Haze, heat and the closing water window
September light is its own subject: dry-season dust and regional smoke build a haze that turns sunsets industrial-orange and gives the midday distance a soft, flattened look. Shoot early, shoot late, and drink more water than feels reasonable in between.
On the water, take the trips early in your stay rather than late. Motorboat routes shorten noticeably as the month runs down, and mokoro at Mboma is generally in its final dependable weeks; by October the channels will have thinned past comfort.
Planning notes
September closes out the six-to-eight-month sell-out window at Xakanaxa and North Gate, so it needs almost the same booking discipline as the flood peak, though cancellations surface more often as the school-holiday pressure fades. Gate hours stay at 06:00 to 18:30 until the end of the month.
The tip: position your camping nights at Xakanaxa or Third Bridge rather than the drier south in this specific month, because the action has contracted to the water and the southern mopane country empties accordingly.
