Moremi in June
June opens Moremi's top tier. The flood is still climbing toward its crest, the interior is drying out fast, the wild dogs go to ground at their dens, and the coldest nights of the year begin their six-week residency.
If you only want the answer
June delivers concentrated game, rising water and denning wild dogs at the price of nights near freezing and campsites that sold out six to eight months ago. If July is full, June is not a consolation; it is the same season with quieter tracks.
Winter takes over
One millimetre of rain in the thirty-year average, days of 25.3°C and nights of 10.7°C, with open-country dawns dipping close to zero. The mopane interior gives up its last surface water and the elephant begin their season-long abandonment of it, drifting toward the Khwai and the lagoon country where the tracks conveniently run.
The flood, meanwhile, keeps rising through the month on its way to the mid-winter crest. Every week adds floodplain, and the lechwe herds track the advancing edge in their thousands.
The dog month
From roughly now until August the Okavango's wild dog packs, part of a population of around 500 that ranks among the species' last strongholds, are anchored to dens. A pack that normally ranges across hundreds of square kilometres becomes findable at a fixed point, and June is the front end of that window, before den moves and growing pups loosen the pattern.
Ask at the gates and at camp for current den gossip, then apply the obvious discipline: distance, engine off, no surrounding. A den abandoned because of vehicle pressure is the worst outcome this reserve offers.
Cold logistics and hard booking truths
Availability at the four public campsites opens around twelve months out, and Xakanaxa and North Gate go six to eight months ahead for the June-to-October block. For June specifically, the previous October to December is your booking season; after that you are refreshing cancellation lists.
The tip is thermal: dawn in an open vehicle in June is a different climate from lunchtime, so pack a down jacket, beanie and gloves and dress for the drive out, not the drive back. Your water containers will be cold enough to sting.
