Moremi in February
Every litre of the flood that will define Moremi's winter is falling out of the sky right now, most of it a country away. February is the month the Delta's main event gets written, and almost nobody is here to see the authorship.
If you only want the answer
February trims January's rainfall to 117 mm but drives on ground that has soaked for three months, which makes it the harder month behind the wheel. Rates stay at the bottom, birding stays superb, and the fishing ban still applies.
The flood is being born, elsewhere
Between December and March the Angolan catchment does the work that Botswana's winter tourists later applaud. That water will take months to travel down the Okavango and fan across the Delta, cresting at Moremi's latitude in the July-August window. Standing at Xakanaxa in February, you are looking at channels that have no idea what is coming.
Locally, February averages 117 mm over 16 rain days, with days of 29.7°C and nights of 20.3°C. Game remains dispersed across a landscape where every hollow holds drinking water, and the compensations are the same currency as midsummer everywhere in the Delta: birds, newborn antelope working their legs, and a reserve almost to yourself.
January's twin, with one difference
If you have read our January page, February is substantially the same proposition, and the two months share a season block for good reason. The one difference worth planning around: rainfall eases, but the driving gets worse, because closure risk and track damage track cumulative soaking rather than this week's storms.
The 2026 season made the point emphatically, with record flooding shutting the whole reserve from early March, damage that had been building through exactly these weeks. Watch DWNP notices closely from late February onward and keep your route plans disposable.
Practicalities for the brave
Campsite pressure is as low as it gets; you still need the mandatory reservation to clear the gate, but short-notice booking works in February. Boats run the permanent lagoons, mokoro at Mboma stays marginal, and the national fishing closed season runs through the end of the month.
The tip: pack a second set of everything that must stay dry, bagged separately, because 16 rain days means your recovery gear will be used wet and stowed wet.
