Moremi in March

March is the down-ramp of Moremi's rainy season: storms shrink to afternoon business, the bush stands at its tallest and greenest, and the reserve waits out the last, most waterlogged weeks before the year turns dry.

If you only want the answer

March averages 64 mm over 10 rain days, less than half of February's total, but it inherits the season's accumulated mud and carries real closure risk, as the record 2026 shutdown from early March proved. Come for value and birds, not for easy driving.

The rain clock winds down

Days of 30.8°C, nights of 19.7°C and a rain pattern that has changed character: instead of long soaking systems you get built-up afternoon storms with clear mornings either side, which restores the dawn game drive as a workable plan. Antelope young born in the summer flush are now on their feet in numbers, and the raptors know it.

The Angolan flood pulse is meanwhile in transit, working its way down the panhandle. Nothing of it has reached Moremi yet; April brings the first arriving water. March belongs entirely to the leftover rain.

The season's mud, concentrated

Falling rainfall does not mean firm tracks. March ground has absorbed the whole summer, the black-cotton stretches near the floodplains are at their most treacherous, and the wooden bridges deserve a walk-across inspection before you commit a loaded vehicle to them.

Precedent matters here: in 2026 the entire reserve closed on about 6 March and stayed shut past mid-April. Build a plan B around Maun or the drier country east of the buffalo fence, and confirm reserve status with DWNP in the final days before you drive, not the week you book.

Value, timing and one deadline

Green-season rates hold through March, vehicle numbers stay minimal, and campsites can still be had at short notice outside the Easter blip. Gate hours remain 05:30 to 19:00 until the end of the month, so use the long evenings.

The deadline is not about March at all: if you are reading this in March and dreaming of July at Xakanaxa or North Gate, those campsites sell out six to eight months ahead, so you are already late for this year. Book next year now, or aim this year at May or November instead.
