Moremi safari itineraries: how many days, day-by-day plans and the Chobe route

Moremi rewards time more than money. The reserve is two hours of sand or a 30 to 45 minute flight from Maun, the best camps sit in two very different worlds (inside the reserve and in the concessions around it), and the classic road north to Savuti and Chobe takes the better part of a week. These plans use the drive times, flight times and 2026 rates from our own research, so you can see what each version takes and costs.

Updated 23 October 2026

The short answer

Plan three nights at the very least, which gives you two full days on the lagoons, and five nights if you can, split between a camp inside the reserve (Xakanaxa, for boats and drives) and one in a Khwai or Delta concession (for night drives and walks). Fly-in guests reach any camp from Maun in 30 to 45 minutes; self-drivers need a 4x4, two hours from Maun to South Gate and another 2.5 hours to Xakanaxa. The classic longer route is Moremi plus Chobe: about eight nights from Maun to Kasane via Khwai and Savuti by 4x4, or a fly-in version that adds the Chobe riverfront and Victoria Falls. As rough 2026 estimates, five fly-in nights start around $4,300 per person and a self-drive camping loop costs a few hundred dollars per person in campsite and park fees before the vehicle.

How many days do you need in Moremi?

Three nights is the honest minimum. By air or by road, the first and last days are partly travel, so three nights gives you two full days of game drives and boats. Day trips from Maun are poor value: two hours to the gate each way means you miss dawn and dusk, which is when the reserve performs.

Five nights is the length we would plan. It lets you split the stay between two areas that do different things: a camp inside the reserve at Xakanaxa for the lagoons and the motorboat to the Gcodikwe heronry, and a camp in the Khwai or south-eastern Delta concessions, where night drives and walks are allowed. Inside Moremi, neither is permitted.

Seven to ten nights covers the classic combinations: Moremi with Savuti and the Chobe riverfront, or with Victoria Falls at one end. Self-drivers on the full Maun to Kasane traverse need about eight nights to do it without driving every day.

Before you plan: three facts that shape every Moremi itinerary

  • You cannot enter the reserve without a confirmed campsite or lodge booking, and the public campsites sell out 6 to 8 months ahead for June to October. Secure the beds first, then the flights.
  • Moremi charges park entry for every calendar day you are inside, including the day you leave: three nights is four fee-days at P270 per person per day for non-residents.
  • Third Bridge stayed closed after the record 2026 floods and on 23 October 2026 we found no confirmation that it has reopened. The plans below do not depend on it; if it reopens, it can replace a Xakanaxa night.
  • The bridges carry vehicles under 5 tonnes only, and track conditions change with the flood. Ask your campsite operator about the route a few days before you drive, not weeks.

3 nights fly-in: the Xakanaxa lagoon

The simplest good Moremi trip: one camp inside the reserve with both land and water activities. Choose Camp Xakanaxa for classic Meru tents, Camp Moremi for families with children six and up, or Okuti for wheelchair access. All three use the Xakanaxa airstrip.

  1. Day 1Airlink from Johannesburg to Maun, about 1 h 40. Light aircraft to the Xakanaxa airstrip, 30 to 45 minutes, possibly with a stop. Afternoon game drive or boat.
  2. Day 2Dawn game drive along the lagoons. Afternoon motorboat through the channels; at peak flood, ask for the Gcodikwe heronry.
  3. Day 3Morning drive deeper into the Mopane Tongue. Afternoon boat or a second drive.
  4. Day 4Last early drive, light aircraft to Maun and your onward flight.

Rough cost: about $2,500 to $4,350 per person sharing. Based on Camp Xakanaxa's third-party 2026 calendar of $690 (low) to $1,290 (high) a night for three nights, plus two light-aircraft legs at the $210 to $240 guideline. International flights excluded; confirm what the camp rate includes. An estimate, not a quote.

3 nights self-drive: South Gate and Xakanaxa

The classic short camping trip, built on the two campsites that are easiest to book and safest to reach in 2026. You need a high-clearance 4x4, recovery gear, and everything bought in Maun the day before.

  1. Night beforeMaun. Fill every tank and jerry can, buy all food and water, draw pula for the gate. Thamalakane River Lodge is from $190 per person bed and breakfast.
  2. Day 1Leave Maun at 06:00. 40 km of tar to Shorobe (about 30 min), then 52 km of dirt and sand to South Gate (about 1.5 h). Pay fees, afternoon drive, camp at South Gate.
  3. Day 2South Gate to Xakanaxa, 42 km and about 2.5 hours of game driving on sand with minor water crossings. Camp at Xakanaxa for two nights.
  4. Day 3Dawn drive on the lagoon circuits. Afternoon motorboat from Xakanaxa Boat Station; book at least two hours.
  5. Day 4Early drive, then back to South Gate (about 2.5 h) and Maun (about 2 h). Out of the gate before it closes. The full fee arithmetic is on our costs page.

Rough cost: about $300 per person for two sharing a vehicle. Based on the operators' campsite rates (about $40 per person per night at both sites, on enquiry), the DWNP camping fee of P60 per person per night, four fee-days of park entry at P270, the vehicle fee and about 70 litres of diesel at September 2026 prices, as on our costs page. Vehicle hire, food and the Maun night are excluded. An estimate.

5 nights fly-in: Xakanaxa plus Khwai

This is the plan we would book for most people. Two nights inside the reserve for the water, three nights in the Khwai community concession for what the reserve does not allow: night drives, walks and off-road driving to a leopard.

  1. Day 1Fly Johannesburg to Maun, light aircraft to the Xakanaxa airstrip (30 to 45 min). Camp Xakanaxa or Camp Moremi, two nights.
  2. Day 2Morning drive, afternoon boat on the lagoons.
  3. Day 3Morning activity, then a light-aircraft hop to the Khwai airstrip, arranged by the camps. Machaba Camp or, for value, Little Sable in the Khwai Private Reserve, three nights.
  4. Day 4Day drive along the Khwai River, which is known for leopard, and a night drive after dinner.
  5. Day 5Guided walk in the morning; mokoro from camp when water levels allow at Machaba.
  6. Day 6Last morning drive, fly to Maun for your connection.

Rough cost: about $4,300 to $7,250 per person sharing. Based on two nights at Camp Xakanaxa ($690 to $1,290, third-party 2026) and three at Machaba Camp ($754 to $1,315, published 2026), plus three light-aircraft legs estimated at the $210 to $240 Maun guideline each. With Little Sable ($660 to $1,445, plus a $60 per night conservation fee) the low end is similar. International flights excluded. An estimate, not a quote.

5 nights fly-in, top end: Chief's Island plus a private concession

The same two-area logic at the top of the market. Start on Chief's Island for the predator density, then move to a private concession on the south-eastern edge of the Delta where the guides can drive at night and off-road.

Two nights at Mombo Camp (from $2,889 low to $5,043 high, 2026) followed by three at Chitabe Camp (from $1,710 to about $3,390), which is known for wild dog. Both are fly-in only: Chitabe is a 30-minute flight from Maun plus a 40-minute transfer. Children under 13 need a private vehicle at Mombo, and Chitabe's minimum age is six. Rough cost: about $11,500 to $21,000 per person sharing for the five nights, including three light-aircraft legs at the $210 to $240 guideline. That estimate uses the published from-rates for the lowest and highest seasons and excludes international flights.

5 nights self-drive: across the reserve to Khwai

For self-drivers with two people to share the driving, five nights let you cross the reserve from South Gate to North Gate and finish outside it on the Khwai, where the community concession allows activities the reserve does not.

  1. Day 1Maun to South Gate, about 2 hours. Camp at South Gate.
  2. Day 2South Gate to Xakanaxa, about 2.5 hours. Camp at Xakanaxa, two nights.
  3. Day 3Lagoon drives and a motorboat trip.
  4. Day 4Xakanaxa to North Gate. The Delta-edge route is 45 km and about half a day when it is open; in May 2026 it was reported inaccessible, and the fallback is back to South Gate and up the 30 km cutline (45 to 60 min). Camp at North Gate.
  5. Day 5Khwai floodplain drives, cross the log bridge and camp at Magotho, the Khwai Development Trust's site, at P400 per person.
  6. Day 6Back to Maun. Via North Gate and the cutline to South Gate, then two hours to Maun; Khwai to South Gate was described as difficult in May 2026, so ask first.

Rough cost: about $330 per person for two sharing a vehicle, in campsite and park fees. Based on about $40 per person per night at South Gate and Xakanaxa, $50 at North Gate on the SKL tariff, P400 at Magotho, the P60 DWNP camping fee for four nights inside, five fee-days of park entry at P270 and the vehicle fee. Vehicle hire, fuel, food and the Maun night are excluded. An estimate.

Moremi and Chobe by 4x4: Maun to Kasane in 8 nights

This is one of the great self-drive routes in Africa: through Moremi, across the Khwai, through Savuti in Chobe National Park and out to the Chobe River at Kasane. Moremi and Chobe are Botswana's only two Category A parks and share the P270 day fee, and both need campsite bookings in advance. There is no reliable fuel between Maun and Kasane, so the jerry cans you fill in Maun carry the whole route. Bushlore rents equipped campers in Maun with one-way options towards Kasane.

  1. Day 1Maun to South Gate, about 2 hours. Camp at South Gate.
  2. Day 2South Gate to Xakanaxa, about 2.5 hours. Camp at Xakanaxa, two nights.
  3. Day 3Lagoon drives and a boat to the heronry.
  4. Day 4Xakanaxa to North Gate (see the 2026 route note in the 5-night plan). Camp at North Gate.
  5. Day 5North Gate to Khwai village, 40 km of sand to Mababe Gate, then 66 km of sand to Savuti. No one publishes reliable times for these legs; allow the whole day and ask at Mababe Gate whether the Sand Ridge Road or the Marsh Road is better. Camp at Savuti, two nights.
  6. Day 6Savuti marsh and channel drives.
  7. Day 7Savuti to Kasane, 165 km: about 70 km of sand to Kachikau via Ghoha Gate, then 93 km of tar, 4 to 5 hours. Kubu Lodge on the river, two nights.
  8. Day 8Chobe riverfront. Sedudu Gate is 7 km from Kasane; take a boat cruise or a game drive.
  9. Day 9Return the vehicle in Kasane and fly out (Airlink flies Johannesburg daily), or continue 95 km by road to Victoria Falls, about 1 h 15 plus two border posts.

Rough cost: about $900 to $950 per person for two sharing a vehicle. Based on campsite rates of about $40 (South Gate, Xakanaxa), $50 (North Gate) and $50 to $70 (Savuti, SKL's undated table and 2026 guide quotes), park entry at P270 per fee-day in both parks, the P60 DWNP camping fee inside Moremi, the vehicle fees, and Kubu Lodge at $211 per person bed and breakfast for two nights (2026). 4x4 hire, one-way fees, fuel and food are excluded. An estimate.

Victoria Falls, Chobe, Moremi and the Delta by air: 8 nights

The fly-in version of the same idea, starting at Victoria Falls and ending in Maun. No driving on sand, and the reserve and a private Delta concession both on one trip.

  1. Day 1Victoria Falls to Kasane by road transfer, 95 km, about 1 h 15 of driving plus the Kazungula border. Kubu Lodge on the Chobe River, two nights on full board, which includes two activities a day and the park fee.
  2. Day 2Chobe riverfront by boat and by vehicle.
  3. Day 3Fly Kasane to Maun on Air Botswana, about an hour (a few flights a week; check the days), then a light aircraft to the Xakanaxa airstrip. Okuti, three nights.
  4. Days 4 and 5Boats on the Maunachira channel and lagoons, game drives in the reserve.
  5. Day 6Light aircraft to the Kiri Waka airstrip, five minutes from Kiri Camp, three nights in the NG32 concession: drives, night drives, walks and mokoro or boating when the water is there.
  6. Days 7 and 8Concession activities.
  7. Day 9Fly to Maun and connect with Airlink to Johannesburg.

Rough cost: from about $7,500 per person sharing in low season. Based on Kubu Lodge full board at $1,025 a night for two (2026), Okuti's 2027 low rate of $740, Kiri Camp from $1,159 plus a $35 levy, and three light-aircraft legs at the $210 to $240 guideline. The Victoria Falls transfer, the Kasane to Maun ticket and international flights are excluded. An estimate, not a quote.

Self-drive figures assume two people sharing a vehicle and exclude 4x4 hire, fuel beyond the 3-night loop, and food. Fly-in figures exclude international flights. All are estimates from 2026 rates (Okuti from its 2027 sheet) and change with season.

When to go, and when to avoid

June to October is the top season. The Okavango flood peaks in July and August in the middle of the dry winter, so boating is at its best while game concentrates on the water. September and October bring the biggest elephant and buffalo herds, and October heat over 40°C. May is the best value month: dry, flood spreading, shoulder rates.

Self-drivers should avoid January to March. Tracks waterlog, the log bridges become uncertain, and in 2026 record flooding closed the whole reserve from about 6 March to 13 April. The rains also turn the black-cotton clay around Savuti slippery from roughly November to April. Fly-in guests can travel in the green season at much lower rates; our green season page explains the trade-off.

Other combinations: Hwange and the wider Delta

Hwange in Zimbabwe joins through Kasane: fly Maun to Kasane or drive the sand route via Khwai and Savuti, then cross at Pandamatenga, from where Hwange's Robins Camp is about 57 km and 1.5 hours on a 4x4 track. Treat the transit day as transit, with fuel at both ends and border paperwork for the vehicle. Our Moremi or Hwange page compares the two parks.

Within the Okavango, the concessions around Moremi are the Delta itself. Moremi Crossing on Ntswi Island, a 20-minute flight from Maun, is the water camp to add if you want mokoro and walking, and Sandibe Under Canvas is the lower-priced way into the Chitabe/Sandibe concession.

Booking the itinerary

Book in this order: campsites or camps first, then light-aircraft legs, then international flights and vehicle hire. For June to October, start 9 to 12 months ahead; campsite diaries open about 12 months out. The public campsites inside Moremi are booked directly with their private operators (Kwalate Safaris for South Gate and Xakanaxa, SKL Camps for North Gate and Savuti, Xomae for Third Bridge), never through DWNP.

A multi-camp fly-in trip is easiest through a safari specialist who books the shuttle routing with the camps. We do not take bookings ourselves; a booking request sent through this site goes to a safari specialist we work with, who may pay us a commission. Where to stay in Moremi compares every camp in these plans by area and price, and the flying in page covers the 20 kg soft-bag rule.
