Maun, the Caravans and the camp airstrips
Flying to Moremi: the scheduled jets, the shuttle layer and the airstrips
Almost every Moremi guest arrives through one small Kalahari airport. Maun (MUB) takes the scheduled jets from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Gaborone, and from its apron a fleet of light aircraft shuttles lodge guests to the bush airstrips of the Delta in 30 to 45 minutes. Here is the whole air layer as of 13 September 2026, and an honest answer on whether you need any of it.
If you only want the answer
Fly Airlink, CemAir or Air Botswana to Maun, then let your lodge book the light-aircraft shuttle to its airstrip: 30 to 45 minutes in a Cessna Caravan, at a published guideline of about $210 to $240 per person each way, with your luggage capped at 20 kg in a soft duffel including hand luggage and camera gear. That is the standard fly-in route, and for Chief's Island camps such as Mombo and Chief's Camp it is the only route, because no road reaches them. If you are self-driving, you never need a plane: none of the public campsites has an airstrip, and your 4x4 is the safari. The best hybrid is a scenic flight out of Maun before or after the drive.
Maun (MUB): the scheduled network in 2026
Maun is where the scheduled world ends and the bush-flying world begins, and the scheduled side is healthier than the town's size suggests. Checked on 13 September 2026: Airlink flies Johannesburg to Maun twice daily, about 1 h 40 in the air, and Cape Town to Maun five times a week, about 2 h 35. CemAir adds a weekday Johannesburg rotation on a CRJ regional jet under its schedule effective April 2026, and Air Botswana also flies the Johannesburg route nonstop. Across the three carriers, aggregators counted around 18 Johannesburg to Maun departures a week in mid 2026, which makes Johannesburg the obvious long-haul connection point for almost everyone.
Within Botswana, Air Botswana connects Gaborone to Maun daily and links Maun with Kasane, the Chobe gateway, about three times a week on June 2026 schedule data, roughly an hour in the air. Coming from Victoria Falls, the practical routing in our July 2026 route research was the short Mack Air hop to Kasane and onward from there, which is how the two great safari circuits of northern Botswana get stitched together.
One 2026 change to know about: Air Botswana suspended its regional routes from Gaborone and Maun to Durban, Windhoek and Cape Town as it reshaped its network, while keeping Maun and Kasane served. If an older itinerary routed you to Maun on Air Botswana from Cape Town, rebook that leg on Airlink. And in the July to October high season, book the Johannesburg leg early: the jets fill from safari traffic long before the fares get friendly.
| Route | Airline | Status on 13 Sep 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Johannesburg - Maun | Airlink | Twice daily, about 1 h 40 |
| Johannesburg - Maun | CemAir | Weekdays on a CRJ, schedule effective April 2026 |
| Johannesburg - Maun | Air Botswana | Nonstop service alongside the other two carriers |
| Cape Town - Maun | Airlink | Five times a week, about 2 h 35 |
| Gaborone - Maun | Air Botswana | Daily |
| Kasane - Maun | Air Botswana | About 3 flights a week, June 2026 schedule data |

The light-aircraft layer: the shuttle system that is Delta tourism
The flying that defines the Okavango starts after the jet. Light aircraft, typically Cessna Grand Caravans, shuttle from Maun to the reserve's airstrips in 30 to 45 minutes, and our July 2026 route research named the operators as Mack Air, Moremi Air, Wilderness Air and Delta Air. We re-checked the two biggest on 13 September 2026: Mack Air is a Maun-based charter operator running transfer, scenic, supply and medevac flying across the Delta and Kalahari, and third-party Delta guides describe it as operating most onward connections from Maun. Wilderness Air has flown camp shuttles out of Maun since 1991 and operates around 22 aircraft in Botswana, carrying 5 to 13 passengers each. Helicopter Horizons adds the rotor layer from the same airport: helicopter transfers and doors-off scenic flights over the Delta.
Understand what you are buying, because these are shuttles rather than scheduled flights. You buy a seat, the operator builds the day's routing around who is going where, your departure time is typically confirmed the day before, and your plane may make up to two stops at other airstrips on the way. Lodges book the leg as part of your package in almost every case; independent travellers can book directly with the operators.
On price, we print only what is published. Our July 2026 research recorded a published guideline of about $210 to $240 per person each way, seat-in-plane, and a 2026 third-party Delta flying guide quotes $220 to $260, so budget in that band and treat the exact figure as your lodge's to confirm. Private charters are priced per aircraft, not per seat, and only make sense for full planes or unusual routings; get a quote from the operators rather than trusting any number a guide page invents.
Which airstrip your camp uses
Every fly-in camp is tied to an airstrip, and the strip often serves a whole cluster, which is why your Caravan may drop other guests before you. The table below comes from the airstrip our lodge research recorded for each camp on this site. Two things stand out. First, Chief's Island is fly-in only: Mombo and Chief's Camp have no road access at all, so the airstrip is not a convenience but the front door. Second, none of the four public campsites, South Gate, Third Bridge, Xakanaxa and North Gate, has an airstrip for visitors: campers self-drive, full stop.
Operators name the strips slightly differently at the margins, Khwai versus Khwai River for instance, and a few camps simply tell you the strip when you book, Monachira and Xigera among them. Transfers from strip to camp are short game drives, five to twenty minutes at most of the camps below, and they are included in the fly-in rates of every camp we checked that publishes inclusions.
| Airstrip | Serves | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Xakanaxa | Camp Moremi, Camp Xakanaxa, Okuti | The lagoon cluster inside the reserve |
| Khwai | Machaba, Khwai Leadwood, Sango, Khwai Guest House, Sediba Sa Rona, Sable Alley, Little Sable, Elephant Pan, Tuludi, Skybeds | Busiest strip in the area; serves both the community concession and the Khwai Private Reserve |
| Khwai River | Little Machaba | About 20 minutes to camp |
| Mombo | Mombo Camp | Chief's Island, fly-in only |
| Chief's Camp | Chief's Camp | Chief's Island, fly-in only |
| Sandibe | Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge, Sandibe Under Canvas | Private concession on the south-eastern edge |
| Chitabe | Chitabe Camp | Shares the concession with Sandibe |
| Gomoti | Gomoti Plains Camp | Gomoti floodplain, south-east of the reserve |
| Qorokwe | Gomoti Private | About 20 minutes to camp; Qorokwe Camp itself confirms its strip on booking |
| Kiri Waka | Kiri Camp | Five minutes to camp |
Airstrip assignments from each property's own materials, gathered July to September 2026. A handful of camps, including Monachira, Xigera and the Kwando camps, list their strip as on request; the lodge tells you when you book.
The soft-bag rule, and the honest comparison
Pack for the small plane, not the jet. The strictly enforced baggage limit on the Maun shuttles is 20 kg per person in a soft duffel, and that figure includes hand luggage and camera gear. Hard suitcases do not fit the Caravan's luggage pod and will be refused, and excess kit can be stored free in Maun with the operators, so the working pattern is a duffel for the Delta and a locked bag left behind.
Now the comparison nobody selling flights will give you. Fly-in guests never touch the sand: jet to Maun, Caravan to the strip, game-drive vehicle to camp, and the deep-sand tracks, the vet fence and the bridge logistics simply never happen to you. Self-drivers never need a plane: no strip serves the campsites, the 92 km road from Maun to South Gate is the actual start of the safari, and the money a family saves on four shuttle seats buys days of park fees. These are two different holidays that happen to share a reserve.
The hybrid our data supports is the scenic flight. Helicopter Horizons flies 30, 45 and 60-minute doors-off scenic flights over the Delta from Maun, and the fixed-wing operators sell scenic flights too, so a self-driver can see the Delta from the air, the one perspective the 4x4 can never give, without surrendering the vehicle or the itinerary. Book it for the Maun end of your trip, morning or late afternoon light, and you have taken the best of the fly-in experience for the price of an activity rather than a transfer.
- Lodge guests: fly. The shuttle is part of the product, the lodge books it, and for Chief's Island there is no alternative.
- Self-drivers: drive. No airstrip serves the campsites, and the vehicle is the safari.
- Families and long stays on a budget: the shuttle seats add up fast; price the road route honestly before you default to flying.
- Anyone with a spare half day in Maun: a scenic flight over the Delta is the strongest hybrid play, doors-off helicopter or fixed-wing.
- Everyone: 20 kg, soft duffel, camera gear included. Sort the bag in Maun, not at the aircraft.
