Machaba put it forward for families or small groups who want complete privacy in the Delta: a dedicated chef, guide and vehicle, so every activity is arranged around what your group feels like doing rather than a camp timetable. The predator viewing is extraordinary, but know the rules before you pay this much: Mombo sits inside Moremi, so there are no night drives and no off-road driving, whatever the price tag. Wilderness was founded in Botswana in 1983 and is now a privately held pan-African group.

A transparency note: Xigera was long associated with the Red Carnation group, but that link no longer appears on either company's materials and we could not verify current ownership, so we list it under its own name.

The most interesting ownership story in the Delta right now. When Belmond's lease was not renewed, the land was returned to the Khwai community, the old lodge was demolished, and Sediba Sa Rona opened in March 2026, run by Desert & Delta with Savanna Expeditions, a company described as 100 percent Botswana-citizen-owned. Accurate framing: a citizen-owned partner on community land, not a community-owned lodge. Guides still quoting 'Belmond Khwai River Lodge' are three years out of date.

The practical Maun bookend to a Moremi trip: riverside chalets 20 minutes from the airport, an activity desk that prices excursions transparently, and safe parking while you fly into the Delta. Worth knowing for budget planners: Maun's long-running backpacker institution Old Bridge Backpackers announced an indefinite closure and is marked permanently closed, though some booking sites still list it. Do not prepay anything there.

The gateway campsite on the reserve's north-eastern corner, beside the log bridge over the Khwai River. It is the natural overnight stop on the classic Maun to Savuti to Chobe traverse, and the Khwai floodplain drives on its doorstep are some of the best in the reserve. Books out months ahead in the dry season.

The cheaper way onto the Sandibe concession, and the reason it matters is the gap: this is roughly a quarter of what the lodge next door charges for game viewing on the same ground, with the same off-road and night-drive freedoms the reserve does not allow. Canvas rather than architecture, and no laundry, but the same guiding. &Beyond sell and book it entirely separately from the lodge.

Mombo's main rival on Chief's Island, built as pavilions rather than tents for guests who want walls and air conditioning with their wilderness. The same honest caveat applies: this is inside Moremi, so night drives and off-roading are not permitted despite the fly-in price. Operated by A&K Sanctuary, part of the A&K Travel Group.

The classic Khwai self-drive campsite, run by the Khwai Development Trust, the community body founded in 2000 that holds the leases over the land north of the river. This is the cleanest 'support local' booking in the entire Moremi area: the trust generated over P1.75 million in community revenue in a single quarter of 2024/25. Fair note: independent research has documented governance disputes and uneven benefit-sharing within the trust, so community benefit is real but not a perfect pass-through. No fences, no facilities, bring everything.

The third of the Khwai Development Trust's campsites, alongside Magotho and Sable Alley, and the one that rarely gets listed. Same arrangement as the others: you book direct with the trust in Maun and the money stays with the community that holds the land north of the river. The rate comes from the trust's own page; the facilities are unconfirmed, so read it as basic 4x4 camping.

The logistical campsite: two hours from Maun, right at the gate, so you clear formalities in the afternoon and are on the game-drive tracks at 06:00 the next morning. The woodland setting is less spectacular than Xakanaxa or Third Bridge, which is exactly why it is the easiest of the four to book.

The campsite with the best position in Moremi, on the edge of the Xakanaxa lagoons where the dry Mopane Tongue meets permanent water. Book through Kwalate Safaris in Maun (office above FNB, New Mall), not DWNP, and book far ahead: this is one of the two campsites that fill first. Unfenced, no power, and elephants walk through camp, so no citrus in your food boxes.

Rra Dinare's sister camp, run with a formal partnership with the neighbouring Sankuyo community. For travellers who want their Delta spend flowing toward Botswana ownership and village employment without the four-figure nightly rates of the famous names, the Dinare pair is one of the most defensible choices in this list.

A water camp on Ntswi Island sold as a Moremi experience, though it actually sits outside the reserve, and that is a feature rather than a catch: walking and mokoro are core activities here precisely because concession rules apply instead of park rules. Kwando Safaris describes itself as 100 percent citizen-owned and managed by people who call Botswana home; that claim is the operator's own, but it is the strongest Botswana-ownership positioning of any major safari company.

The 'father buffalo' camp on the Gomoti river system, named for the herds that move through the concession. Kwando Safaris describes itself as 100 percent citizen-owned, claiming Botswana's first all-Batswana-staffed camps and first female guide, tracker, pilot and CEO; those are the operator's own claims, but they are specific and long-standing.

The classic Moremi campsite, deep in the reserve where the Mboma loop meets the lagoons. Unfenced, so hyaenas patrol at night and you zip your tent fully. After the record 2026 floods the Third Bridge area stayed closed even once the rest of the reserve reopened in April, and we have found no confirmation it has reopened since. Call Xomae before you build an itinerary around it.

Moremi has one of Africa's strongest community stories: the reserve itself was proclaimed by the Batawana people in 1963. Today the cleanest way to put money into local hands is the Khwai Development Trust campsites on the reserve's northern boundary, and Kwando Safaris describes itself as 100 percent citizen-owned. Sankuyo's community-owned Santawani Lodge on the southern boundary is another genuine local option. Most other camps around Khwai sit on community land and pay lease fees to the trust: real money for the village, but the community does not own the camps. Look for Locally owned in the line under each name, or use the Who owns it filter.
